I'm running an updated version of my presentation skills course for UKeIG this year. It takes place at CILIP HQ.
We focus on creating amazing PowerPoint materials, but also talk about presenting itself, and using newer tools like Prezi and Kahoot. It's a very hands-on workshop, with plenty of time spent creating presentations, but it's NOT the kind of course where you have to stand up in front of the class and do a presentation!
Some quotes from previous versions of this course:
“I would definitely offer it to other colleagues as I feel the techniques covered are ones that could be practically incorporated into working practice i.e. they’re not just a gimmick to do once to show you’ve attended the workshop, but something that you can build in to your presentations to continue that search for best practice and therefore better experience for attendees – whether they’re students, staff, or members of the public.”
“Fantastic course, wonderful trainer. One of the best training sessions I have ever been on! Presentation and pace was perfect with plenty of time to try things out."
“I found this session very useful indeed and will be using all the tips to help improve my presentation skills. For me it was the perfect balance of information, activity, and experimentation. Hugely enjoyable, when are you coming back?”
“Ned is an expert and an engaging speaker. Very supportive atmosphere for learning. I’ve looked at Ned’s material online but it was great to have him explain it. Very, very relevant and a big help in my day-to-day work. Thank you Ned!”
I'm running one more set of dates for PiCS in 2017, aimed at Libraries in Australia.
The training will take place over two sessions, two days apart (the 12th and 14th of December), each lasting two hours. More details including booking can be found on PiCS' website.
This practical training covers the fundamentals of marketing your Library as a whole, or specific services within it. It's not about logos and slogans, it's about your community. We'll explore how to truly be heard and listened to above the white noise of modern life.
We'll look first at communication types and then work on segmenting your audience and tailoring messages for each group. We'll look at online publishing and social media, before tying everything together in a strategic marketing plan. Delegates will get a template marketing campaign document to work on in the session and then take back to their own institutions to develop. Everything in this workshop is designed to be applicable right away, whether you want to better communicate the value of a particular service or market your entire library.
The third and final set of courses I'm running online for PiCS in 2017 will focus on social media for libraries. As with the previous ones this will happen a couple of times for different time zones.
The training will take place over two sessions a week apart, each lasting two hours.
Social Media Next Steps Part 2) August 17th. 3pm - 5pm AEST.
[Click here for all times and dates: including this course at different times and dates, and two other sets of workshops delivered online for PiCS this year.]
This is designed for anyone who uses social media on behalf of their institution, and who wants to looks beyond the basics of what these tools are and why to use them, and focus on how to use them more strategically and effectively.
By the end of this hands-on session attendees will:
These will be interactive online workshops, using online software. Delegates will log-in on their PCs, and we'll run the training and provide tech support, plus all the slides and materials and an online booklet with the tasks and instructions in.
As well as hands-on exercises, there will be chances throughout to ask questions and interact with other delegates, just as you'd expect in face-to-face onsite training. All the content and materials are tailored for the online environment and I've got this whole thing down to a fine art, it works well.
We've left a week between the two parts because there will be some ideas to go away and play and things to try out between sessions.
You can book onto this course via the PiCS website - go to pics.com.au/events-2/59-social-media-next-steps/ or click the image below. The cost is A$320 excl. GST. This includes all the materials to cascade across your own institution.

Digital Tools Part 2) July 14th. 3pm - 5pm AEST
This online training covers several useful online tools to help modern libraries communicate. They're all free to use, they all help solve existing problems, and they're all available to use right away (rather than being some kind of 'future trend' which is still a couple of years off...)
Tools and concepts covered include marketing with video, online publishing platforms, augmented reality, mobile and apps, and geolocational platforms.
In week one learn whats new, take away and test it out. Come back in week two and share with the group your experience.
These will be interactive online workshops, using GoTo Training software. Delegates will log-in on their PCs, and we'll run the training and provide tech support, plus all the slides and materials and an online booklet with the tasks and instructions in.

This is part of the second wave of online training I'm doing with PiCS in 2017. There will be three separate courses, done across a couple of different time zones for the Australasian library world. They're all communication themed, and the second set are on digital marketing and online tools.

A UKeIG workshop open to all. Booking info on the UKeIG website.
This is a course aimed at those already using Twitter and Blogs professionally. I wouldn't describe it as 'Advanced' as such, but certainly 'Improvers' level rather than those just starting out.
Aimed primarily at using these tools in an organisational context (although the advice would be applicable to using them purely as yourself too...), we'll be covering how to use these platforms more effectively (and strategically), how to sustain use over time, how to build an audience and a larger network, what to do with tumblr, how to analyse your own activity, and how to measure the impact of your social media use. It's about increasing the level of engagement your library gets online, in a meaningful way. Participants will also be invited to submit their own specific queries ahead of time so all of your specific issues can be covered!
I am absolutely delighted to be giving a talk at the NLPN's conference at Madlab in Manchester. I really miss interacting with New Professionals (now it's a full five years since I could legitimately call myself one) and this talk is about things I wish I'd known earlier.
There's loads of other great talks happening too. NLPN are a great group, really looking forward to this whole thing.
More details of the event here from NLPN's own blog. Get your (FREE) ticket via Eventbrite, here.
